Suggestions for a Cheaper, Greener, More Eco Friendly Christmas and New Year

Filed under: Christmas Presents — Christmas Shopper @ 3:26 pm

Davinos Greeno asked:

Christmas tree

• Rather than buying a real tree thats been cut down, transported and then thrown away, purchase a large potted plant or small tree that can be used each year as your evergreen Christmas tree.

• You could always purchase an artificial tree that can be reused for many years, these range from 10 pounds to over 100 pounds. Ours actually looks real!

• If you buy a real tree, pay the Woodland Trust or a different organization to plant one in its place!

Christmas Decorations

• If you have evergreen shrubs and trees - to make sure you have an annual supply of eco-friendly Christmas decorations why not do some of your pruning just before Christmas and use the choice bits for inside? If you have not got any evergreens but have a garden ask for some of these plants as Christmas presents. They may take a few years to grow but then all you will need to do is harvest in December and be as creative as you like.

• Make a homemade wreath using branches trimmed from your garden or somebody elses.

• Purchase handmade decor made from recycled or eco-friendly materials. If possible by Fair trade as well, as they are a great way to support the disadvantaged. While some of these crafts may not be from recycled materials they provide much needed income to needy individuals.

• Ivy is good to drape around pictures, windows and the base of Christmas trees, it will hide the wires of the tree lights. There is as far as I know no substitute for electric fairy lights but as they last for years and use very little power, their impact is relatively low and they do look great.

• One of the advantages of using natural decorations is that after Christmas they do not need to go in the bin they can enter your normal garden waste on the compost heap.

Christmas tree ornaments

• Make homemade ornaments from (painted) pinecones, painted eggshells, crushed (colored) aluminum foil, paper chains, paper snowflakes, old CDs and more!

• Decorate a doll as an angel.

• Do an online search for recycled or homemade tree ornaments for numerous ideas or purchase these recycled or eco-friendly tree ornaments if you cant be bothered to make them.

Gifts

• Buy a subscription to an organisation working to make the world a better place such as the RSPB, RSPCA or Oxfam.

• If you are buying a present that uses batteries make sure the person you are buying it for has a battery charger and buy rechargeable batteries.

• Buy a homemade present, bird table, compost bin. Chocolate cakes often go down very well!

Gift wrap

• Collect extra photocopies or no longer needed papers from work for your children to draw on the back.

• Use colored pictures from your childrens colouring books.

• Use leftover pieces of fabric or wallpaper.

• Use recycled paper.

• Put the gift inside another gift such as a decorative tin, nice wooden box etc.

• Use gift wrap, gift bags and gift boxes, ribbon and bows from last Christmas or previous celebrations. Leave the tags blank on the gifts you are giving so that they can be reused.

Greeting cards & gift tags

• Send an e-card.

• Make a greeting card or tag from scrap paper, fabric or wallpaper.

• Make cards or tags from pieces of food box.

Packing material

• Use saved packing material such as foam or bubble wrap.

• Crush up newspaper into loose balls. This is cheap, quick and lightweight! This is our preferred method for box filler.

After the New Year

• Find out where you can recycle your real Christmas tree or Christmas cards, local councils and supermarkets are a good place to start. They will turn your trees into mulch for use in parks and public gardens.

• Use any wrapping paper that is no longer reusable for shelf liners or craft projects.

• Save boxes, gift bags, wrapping, filler, ribbons and bows for future gift wrapping or craft projects. Give them away to friends, neighbours etc if you have too many to keep.

The Yuletide ’tis the Season for a Christmas Wedding

Filed under: Christmas Presents — Christmas Shopper @ 6:51 am

Calvin Bailey asked:

Christmas time, the season of excitement, family get-togethers, sharing and communion. It’s a time when friends and family come together not only to deck the halls with boughs of holly, but to gather together in joyous reminiscing of a year gone by and to share hopeful expectations for the coming year.

Why not add to the yule tide cheer this Christmas by tying the knot with a Christmas Wedding?

Having a Christmas theme wedding this winter is a great way to celebrate the peace and joy of the winter holidays and is a sure way to make your wedding a memorable one for years to come.

Sure, there are some who cringe at the thought of exchanging vows at a time of sub-zero emperatures, but winter weddings, especially during the Christmas season has become increasingly acceptable and is quite popular.

In fact, from a logistical stand point, a Christmas wedding may make more sense as family and friends are already on holidays which will make it easier to attend your wedding. But you will want to make sure that you send out your

invitations at least 3-4 months in advance to give your guests ample notice of your upcoming Christmas wedding. We all know how busy it can get as the Christmas season approaches so you’ll want to make sure your wedding party and guests don’t overbook themselves and end up missing your special day.

Are you determined to have a Christmas wedding but not too sure how to make it all happen? Then consider the Traditional and Elegant Christmas wedding themes, they’re really quite popular;

The Elegant Christmas Wedding Theme

A beautiful option for a Christmas wedding is to make everything very formal and elegant. Think black tie and evening dress and all the elegance of a grand ball. You could decorate the church or wedding hall with white lights and satin and trim the pews with gold ribbons. Dress your attendants in elegant evening wear and wear a glamorous vintage style gown. Whether indoors or out, make sure to include an elegant white Pashmina wool wrap, for you and your attendants to make sure you not too cold during the ceremony.

At the reception, have a large natural Christmas tree in the corner of the room decorated with ropes of white lights and golden bows. Decorate the tables with large bowls containing gold or white floating candles and white rose petals.

As a wedding favor, give guests a small gold Christmas ornament inscribed with the date of the wedding and your names. Guests will have a memorable keepsake reminder of your wedding. Wrap all the ornaments, in a white box with a gold

ribbon, and pile them under the Christmas tree. At the end of the reception invite each guest to pick their own “present” from under the tree. An elegant Christmas wedding with simple, tasteful decorations in white and gold doesn’t have to be expensive. If you are creative you can have a gorgeous and elegant Christmas wedding even if you’re on a tight budget.

The Traditional Christmas Wedding Theme

Perhaps a traditional Christmas wedding would be your style. If so, use all the traditional Christmas elements to create a romantic, warm, joyous event that will combine the good will of the Christmas season with the happiness of your wedding. Decorate the church or wedding hall with multi colored Christmas lights. Use green and red poinsettias for decorations, and carry red roses bundled together with lots of greenery tied with a gold ribbon for your bouquet.

Dress your attendants in simple holiday dresses in red and green, with gold jewelry. Use Christmas present bows to decorate each pew in the church and fill the church with gold candles.

At the reception, focus on making the room romantic and cozy. What you want to do is recreate the warmth and feeling of your living room on Christmas morning. Have a large natural Christmas tree in a corner decorated with strings of colored lights, strings of tinsel, candy canes, icicles, ropes of popcorn and cranberries, bows, ornaments, and candles.

Choose lots of different styles of ornaments, but make sure that each one is marked with the date and your names, even if it’s just marked with a pretty printed sticker on the bottom. Make sure there are more ornaments on the tree than there are guests at the reception and invite each guest to select an ornament off the tree as a party favor.

Make a nice selection of coffees, teas, eggnog, and hot chocolate. Have platers of Christmas cookies, candy canes, white and green mints, fudge, and other Christmas treats set out on tables for your guests to snack on.

You could also serve a traditional Christmas dinner of ham or turkey with all the fixings. If you are going to allow children at the reception, consider setting up a children’s area with plenty of seating, a DVD player and holiday favorites such as The Christmas Story, Frosty the Snowman, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and other holiday movies favorites to make the evening an enjoyable one for them as well.

Having a Christmas wedding can be a lovely way for everyone to celebrate your marriage and the holidays at the same time. Use the excitement, joy, love and happiness of the Christmas season to make your wedding a memorable one. The Yuletide ’tis the season to have a Christmas wedding.

Danny Fox asked:

Christmas is Christ’s day. It is basically linked to Jesus Christ, owing the root of the word Christmas to Christ’s Mass or from the English root “Cristes maesse”. For the Christians, Christmas means renewal of one’s faith. Thinking of a new life ahead and forgetting about the past that has gone. For non-Christians, it is basically a family celebration. For most, they consider it to be the merriest season of the year. It is a special occasion that a lot of people await. It is one celebration that Christians and non-Christians alike celebrate, too.

The spirit of Christmas is first felt during the start of October. Loud Christmas decorations are brought out as early as the end of summer with the lights twinkling in the houses. 10 Tips to Find the Best Christmas Gift for your Loved Ones or Friends

Filed under: Christmas Presents — Christmas Shopper @ 7:51 pm

Davion W asked:

Christmas season is one of the most welcome festive seasons as families and friends gather for get-togethers, enjoying sumptuous meals and doing some catching up. Gift exchanges and showering our loved ones and friends are also an indispensable part of Christmas. But if you have ever shopped for a gift, you would know that it can be quite challenging to find the right gift for the person you have in mind. So I will going to outline some simple tips that you can follow to find the best Christmas gift you can give to whoever it is. At the end of this article, I will also reveal to you a secret and special Christmas gift you can give to most young people, teens especially.

1. Always plan ahead. Give yourself enough time to shop for a good gift you’re your friend/loved one will like. You do not want to rush through it and make a hasty decision. It would be even more disastrous if you make a bad choice.

2. Find out the person’s interest. Know what he/she likes. Depending on what his/her interests are, you can get a gift that complements it. Take for instance, the person may like dogs, so a stuff toy dog could be an appropriate gift. Talking about this, it always amazes me to know that people always buy the gifts that they like rather than what the receiver would love to receive.

3. Ask the person if you have to. Do not be afraid to ask what the receiver thinks of the best Christmas gift. This will help you a great deal in giving him/her something useful and what they really hope to get.

4. Know your budget. Decide how much you are willing to spare for the gift. It’s easier to locate your Christmas gift when you have decided on a price range for it. It would also make the job easier for the salespersons to assist you at the departmental store or gift shop.

5. Wrapping always makes the difference. All of us like to receive our Christmas gifts wrapped in a nice and presentable manner for it shows the thought that goes into the gift. You may have a great gift but if the packaging is horrible, it does not bring out your thoughtfulness. Remember, first impression counts.

6. Attach a note or a card to it. Convey your wishes and thoughts for the person. Words are always very meaningful. Tell your friend/loved one of your feelings and appreciation of them being around.

7. Give to them in person if you can.

8. Gift of your presence and time. Sometimes, the best Christmas gift is not a material one. Your loved one/friend may just want to be treated to a nice meal in a cosy restaurant or getaway over the weekend. Quality time could be more valuable to the person.

9. Make sure not to give something that could be sensitive. You are presumed to know what this person would already like or dislike. So please do yourself a favour by not giving him or her something that could potentially be an object of dislike, such as making a present that reminds him/her of an unpleasant experience, etc.

10. Buy an appropriately priced present. This really depends on who you are giving the Christmas present to. It may be appropriate to give your spouse or girlfriend an expensive ring but this can backfire if given to a friend. Well, you don’t want your friend to feel obligated to return you an equally priced item, do you?

You will find these tips useful for all occasions, and not just this Christmas season. If you are suddenly awoken to the rude shock that Christmas is coming and you still have not finished your Christmas gift shopping, fret not as there is still hope. Do your friends or loved ones such as your siblings, teens if you are a parent, own an iPod? Most young adults do own that gadget. Did you know that you can give them an iPod downloads lifetime membership as a gift? It only costs less than a meal out in the restaurant and they would surely be pleased with this unique special gift of unlimited iPod music, movies and video downloads. Perhaps you may get one for yourself too. Find out more from my blog.

Modern Christmas Traditions

Filed under: Christmas Presents — Christmas Shopper @ 10:30 am

Dimitry asked:

ef=”http://www.christmassprite.com/2008/10/17/modern-cristmas-traditions/”>Traditions of Christmas Gifts

We see the very first Christmas presents being given far back in history. In ancient Rome, during the feast of Kalends, it was tradition for the high-ranking officials to give gifts to the Roman Emperor. This wasn’t technically a Christian holiday (it was actually pagan) but it does coincide with the time of year and the gift-giving tradition.

A person who jump-started the gift-giving traditions at Christmas was good old Saint Nicholas. He was known for giving gifts.

Christmas gifts traditions

Christmas presents as we know them today actually started in America. It’s been a longtime tradition to give little gifts to friends and family, but the massive giving that goes on nowadays is a creation all our own.

In the early 1800s stores and companies started advertising Christmas gifts. By the 1840s, the tradition of lavish giving was fully ingrained into American society.

Giving gifts to those we love is in sync with the true spirit of Christmas. So let the Christmas presents roll - it’s a wonderful time of year.

Traditions of Christmas Letter

You’ve probably gotten at least one Christmas letter in your life. Some people love them, others hate them. When did the tradition begin?

The first actual Christmas letter was probably written hundreds of years ago. The tradition of sending “greetings” to family members over the holidays has been around longer than the actual “greeting card” so it’s safe to say that Christmas letters were the original “Christmas greeting” of choice.

It’s important to note that Christmas letters as we know them today is a pretty recent development. Once greeting cards were made available actual “letters” to family and friends fell to the wayside. Thanks to copy machines and at-home printers, that’s all changed.

The New Christmas Letter

I received my first two Christmas letters in the 90s. One I loved and the other I hated. One was full of warm wishes and holiday cheer, the other was filled with “I did that” and “we did this” nonstop bragging.

I’m under the impression that the “oh I’m wonderful” Christmas letter tradition started in the 90s too. Personally, I prefer the less-bragging more thanking and rejoicing Christmas letter approach. It’s probably more in line with the traditional Christmas letters of yesteryear.

So this year if you decide to write a Christmas letter, remember that you are doing something that was done well before greeting cards or Hallmark were ever invented. And please, for the sake of sanity, make it a “How wonderful is He” letter and not a “How wonderful am I” holiday correspondence.

Wonderful Childrens Christmas Songs in School Christmas Plays

Filed under: Christmas Presents — Christmas Shopper @ 9:29 pm

Hall Andrew asked:

Children are always excited when they hear Christmas songs. There are probably more children’s Christmas songs composed and performed than Christmas songs intended for adults.  Music for Schools Ltd. has a collection of children’s Christmas songs which can be performed for school Christmas plays.  The songs which are easy to learn are about the traditions and symbols of Christmas.

The songs bring the Christmas story to life by singing about everything that is about Christmas. There are songs about the Christmas star, the Christmas candle, angels, the manger, the Christmas cracker, and Christmas presents.   The traditions of Christmas written about in the songs will provide a learning opportunity for the children.

The Christmas collection is an all new composition meant for children.  It is always a delight to hear children singing Christmas songs and sharing the good news with adults.  Music for Schools Ltd. designed the collection for school Christmas plays to educate and inspire children ages 5 to 9 about Christmas.

The story of Christmas told through songs in a school play can be a fun learning experience for the children.  This can have a great impact on their very young minds.  These are Christmas musicals that children would love to sing especially when accompanied by a guitar, piano, or keyboard.  School Christmas plays can also be a great way to tell the Christmas story, either using scripts or stand alone performances of the songs that celebrate the spirit of Christmas.

The school Christmas plays and childrens Christmas songs provided by Music for Schools Ltd. can only be performed within the vicinity of the institution. The lyrics can be saved, copied or printed, and distributed among the students and faculty.

In order to provide support during rehearsals, there are sung versions in the CD collection of Christmas songs for the children. Also, backing track versions of each song for the public performance. The collection can be used for solo, small, and large group presentations.

One thing that can be guaranteed, those who buy the package need not make any adaptations because it is already perfect for school plays. The message that the collection brings can assist the kids to remember what this celebration is all about.

Christmas Gift Ideas

Filed under: Christmas Presents — Christmas Shopper @ 11:50 pm

Sean Carter asked:

It’s almost a custom these days to wish ‘Merry Christmas’ with Christmas gifts. The current tradition of giving gifts on Christmas came into popular practice following the Three Wise Men’s (Magi) gifts to baby Jesus. Gift-giving during Christmas is primal to the age-old tradition of Christmas, and this took larger proportions slowly through the years with the rise of consumerism. Now if you come to think of it, today’s Christmas is really impaired without those big boxes in colorful wrappers tied up with glistening ribbons and piled up at the foot of the Christmas evergreen, those red stockings chock-a-block with Santa’s givings, those warm cards displayed on the mantle and many more sweet Christmas surprises. Evidently Christmas gifts have become integral to our Christmas holidays ! Every Christian bears the spirit of giving and sharing on Christmas. So what are you planning to gift your dear ones this Christmas ? Here are some Christmas gift ideas for you to check out:

Christmas gifts can be anything from some pretty flowers to a chic jewelry. So then, you can never fall short of ideas when it comes to Christmas gifts. Flowers are wonderful gifts for all occasions. And they can brighten up days on Christmas too !

Christmas gift baskets are wonderful ideas for Christmas presents as well. You can make one yourself or buy one for your friends, siblings or sweetheart anytime. A gift basket stuffed with cookies, chocolates and other little surprises would surely make the difference to your loved ones’ days !

Gift certificates for Christmas won’t be bad ideas either. So send all your wishes and good cheer in a piece of envelope and fly them to your dear ones on Christmas.

Christmas decorations can be good Christmas gifts too. A box of Christmas ornaments would instantly set the sparkles in the hearts of the receivers on the holidays.

How about some stunning necklace, pendant or earrings for the women folk this Christmas ? For all their proverbial craving for “all that shines”, they would simply slobber over these well-chosen Christmas gifts of yours !

Wines and cigars as Christmas gifts are bound to strike the right chord for the men folk. These would sweep them off their feet and you can’t help spot that glint in their eyes once they get the sleek wine bottle or the splendid cigar-case as Christmas presents.

Candle-stands, photo-frames, doormats, wall hangings, nice paintings, flower vases, garden accents, personalized plaques—all these could just be your choice for this Christmas season. What’s unique with these is that these are good gift ideas for your boss, colleagues, teacher, Reverend, neighbors and other acquaintances too. Home decors always make cool Christmas gifts. If you want to sebd free Christmas ecards you can check out some free card sites like 123greetings.com

DVDs, music CDs, music accessories, audio books and musical instruments would be perfect Christmas gifts for your music lover buddies. So why not drop them these surprise gifts this holiday ?

Sports goods for sports nuts, electronic gadgets for the gizmo buffs, or may be some fitness equipment for the health freaks—choose your Christmas gifts wisely and well in advance to avoid the rush of the Christmas shopping season.

Cool Christmas toys—mini Santa, reindeer sledges, little elves, musical trees, Christmas story books, puzzles, Christmas games, pretty dolls, macho trains and cars—are all peachy Christmas gift ideas for the kiddos that are waiting to be picked !

Christmas lights and lamps are yet some more glowing ideas for Christmas gifts. And these are all the rage during this season too.

What are the Benefits of Early Christmas Gift Shopping?

Filed under: Christmas Presents — Christmas Shopper @ 11:03 am

Andrea Cox asked:

I know people complain about those people that buy their Christmas presents in the January sales but there is something to be said for getting organised. It really depends on two main factors – time and money. If you have plenty of both then Christmas shopping really is not a problem. If you work or shopping time is limited then you have to be organised and start early. If you really don’t have the time to go out shopping more than once or twice then you will do better to rely on the wonderful world of internet shopping but again this is not something you can leave to the last minute. Even though companies promise next day delivery and all the rest of it they can only deliver what they have in stock. And if they haven’t got it you can’t have it.

Why start shopping for Christmas gifts early?

If you start early you will almost certainly get what you want and you’ll be able to spread the cost. If you have children to buy for then you know it becomes increasingly difficult to track down that special doll or toy the nearer you get to the big day. My children are quite young and have yet to really express a strong desire for anything in particular thank goodness. But I know when that time comes I do not want to be outside a toy shop at 6am in the queue for some must-have robot thing. My motto now is if you see it, get it and tuck it away. Saves a lot of time and heartache. Not only will you then have your presents bought you can get them wrapped at your leisure instead of a frantic and exhausting Christmas Eve which nobody enjoys. There is also the bonus of shops having mid-season sales which helps you complete your list and saves you a few pennies as you shop for Christmas gifts.

Christmas gift shopping vs Christmas events

The lead up to Christmas is a busy time for all. Work parties, lunches, nativety plays and Christmas fairs. Most people enjoy this time and it’s a shame to have it spoilt because you’re fretting about finishing off you’re shopping. If you have a family or if you are hosting Christmas then you will almost certainly be trying to get your house in some kind of order and planning the feasting. Catering at Christmas is a huge operation and one which needs careful organisation. There’s the thinking about it, the list making, the cake and pudding making, the butcher’s order, the filling of the freezer.

In conclusion shopping for Christmas gifts early frees you to do the planning and doing of decorating the house and ordering the food for the Christmas period without the panic buying and over-expending that happens to many each year.

Five Simple Ways to Teach your Children Giving at Christmas

Filed under: Christmas Presents — Christmas Shopper @ 10:31 am

Jill Hart asked:

1.Read the Christmas story:

Take some time to sit down and read the biblical Christmas story with your kids. Use this opportunity to share with them how our Lord gave of Himself to come to earth as a lowly babe in a manager. The wise men’s gifts to Jesus in this story are another picture of giving at Christmas.

In our family, we’ve often used this as a way to explain to our children why we give gifts to one another at Christmastime. We explain that just as the wise men gave precious gifts to Jesus to celebrate His birth, we give gifts to one another to remember His birthday. In all the excitement about presents and Santa, kids sometimes need a reminder of what Christmas is really about.

2.Let your children pick out gifts for each family member:

Allowing children to pick out the gifts they will give is a good way to get them excited about giving. It helps them to experience the joy of giving when their loved ones are opening gifts they picked out. If your child is old enough to receive an allowance or hold a job, you can deepen the experience for them by encouraging them to spend their own money.

Even very young children can begin to understand the meaning behind Christmas presents. The year our daughter was two, I took her to one of the dollar stores in town and allowed her to pick out items to give her father and grandparents. Christmas morning she was almost more excited about handing out the presents she was giving than she was about the gifts she was receiving.

3.Volunteer:

Giving is something that children can learn not only at home, but out in the community as well. Christmas is a good time to volunteer at a local homeless shelter, soup kitchen or church. Seeing others that are less fortunate and being able to reach out and help is a good lesson for kids to learn at any age.

4.Provide Christmas for a Needy Family :

Another way to show your children the joy of giving is to allow them to help you gather gifts, food and other necessities for a family in need. There are many ministries such as Angel Tree and Operation Christmas child that can help you connect with others that may not be able to afford Christmas presents. You can also check with your church to see if there are any local families that may have suffered a job loss or tragedy and need help this Christmas.

5.Collect non-perishables for local charities:

Some local charities rely on Christmastime donations to get them though the year. This is a great way to get the kids active and show them what giving is really all about. It is important for kids to understand that sometimes giving isn’t about expensive gifts; it’s about giving time and going out of their way for others.

The lesson of giving, when consistently taught, will last your child a lifetime. It’s a lesson that compounds annually as it touches countless lives and is a beautiful reflection of what God gave each of us so many years ago, the gift of His only Son.
