CHILDREN’S PYJAMAS CAN PUT THEM TO SLEEP

Filed under: Uncategorized — Christmas Shopper @ 2:32 pm

Children’s wardrobes are getting a lot of attention these days.Character clothing, designer wear, big brands.the demands are endless.  But while we are very focused on their day wear, do we pay as much attention to what our kids go to sleep in ?

Children are estimated to spend over a third of their childhood - 40% actually - asleep.  Research also shows that a child’s sleep has a direct impact on both their physical and mental development.  Why then, do we dash into the shops and make a rushed purchase or capitulate to our children’s demands for unsuitable bedclothes just because the fabric is printed with comic characters, when there may be better – and even healthier – choices?

While most parents have their children’s best interests at heart, sometimes we need reminding about the important things, like making sure our children wear the right sleepwear.Sometimes, young sensitive skin can react badly to fabrics such as nylon and polyester, which are not natural fabrics and which prevent the skin from breathing properly.  The rough texture of some fabrics can also cause rashes and itching.

Sensitive skins need a sensitive touch and 100% pure cotton has been proved to be the best choice.Whether you’re looking for something warm in winter or airy in summer, cotton is suitable for any environment.  And it’s the 100% pure Indian cotton that makes kids’ bed clothes from Midsummernightsdream the perfect antidote for a peaceful night.

And with plenty of satisfied customers of her French-inspired nighties and pyjamas, Liz Collins, owner of Perth sleepwear shop, Midsummernight’s Dream, says she gets great feedback from both kids and adults on the pure cotton sleepwear she has been designing and manufacturing for over 10 years. Our pure cotton sleepwear has been designed on the generous side and French-seamed to maximise comfort which is probably why all my customers tell me they sleep really well when they’re in our nighties and pyjamas.”

She applies the same design and manufacturing philosophy to her children’s range, which includes beautifully hand embroidered winter and summer styles, pyjamas and dresses as well as sleepwear for babies.  “We source the finest quality cotton from India, which is gentle on sensitive skin and hypoallergenic.Pure cotton washes and dries easily and doesn’t lose any of its comfort or softness, which is a huge help with children around,” she said.

With all the developments of modern life, there seems to have been an increase in allergies, and we would do well to go back to some trusted remedies, such as wearing pure cotton sleepwear to bed to get a good night’s rest, to ensure we give ourselves and our families the best shot at a healthy start to the day.

Your Children will Love a Model Railway as Much as You Did

Filed under: Uncategorized — Christmas Shopper @ 6:13 pm

In recent years there has been nothing short of an explosion in interest in model trains and railways. Some have said that this is due to baby-boomers who fondly remember their own model trainsets, now buying model train sets for their own children.

That is certainly true for me. I am one of those baby boomers and I have fond memories of many hours spent with my brother and father building sometimes elaborate model railway systems. We completely transformed our dining room into what we called our railway room with a huge, elaborate system of tracks and buildings. We managed to keep the track set up in our railway room right up until Christmas when family guests for Christmas dinner meant that my mother insisted that we dismantle the track and return the railway room to its preceding dining room status. I can distinctly recall how disappointed my father was when he was forced to dismantle and box up the train track, locomotives and trackside buildings.

In fact, reflecting on those days, I think it was doing things with my father that was more important to me than the model railway. My father never really showed any interest in my school work or playing football or and sports for that matter. But when it came to model trains and railways he would suddenly become animated and enthusiastic. The one guaranteed way to get him to put down the newspaper and leave his comfortable armchair was to suggest we have a session on the railway.

Model trains are good for any age, providing a fun, rewarding and engaging hobby. Model trains should not be confused with toy trains. Good quality model trains are scale models of the real thing that can provide a valuable learning aid, helping young and old to understand the development of rail transport.

Way back in the 1850s Marklin, a German manufacturer of dolls-house accessories, introduced the first boxed train-set. This was intended to broaden their market by appealing to boys. They were also responsible for producig accessories for their train sets including trackside buildings. The company are still in business today.

It was the American company Carlisle Finch who are reputed to have introduced electric trains in 1897, but the Lionel Corporation are responsible for developing electric model trains. Their first Electric train, called the Electric Express, was actually not intended for sale. It was originally intended to be used as a storefront display.

Jump forward to today and you will find many fathers, like myself, who have fond memories of many hours shared with their fathers building and playing with model train sets. We buy systems for our own children but, in truth, its more about us re-visiting our own childhoods and the happy times that we spent with our trains.

Avoiding Inappropriate Books for Kids

Filed under: Uncategorized — Christmas Shopper @ 6:16 pm

There are many kids story books out there so parents have a lot of of choices. Parents can read with their kids or the kids can read on their own. Reading can be a great activity alone as well as together. However], books can be costly, so you may want to find a way to get cheap books such as joining the local libraries or buying from half price stores. Your local library should have a lot of kids books to choose from. If they do not, they should be able to borrow from other libraries, even from out of state libraries.

It is important to choose the right books to start your children off. You mustpick suitable books that are also fun to read so that your kids will not get bored and will want to read more books. At your library, you are likely to find books that are age appropriate for your children and books that your children should not read. Some parents just let their kids loose in the kids’ section of the library and let them find what they want to read. Others prefer to check with kids book reviews and only expose their children to books that are appropriate. There are many kids’ book reviews online, in newspapers, and in magazines for parents. Your local library may also have a list of recommended books for kids.

For babies and toddlers, board books are great. Many board books are often small books that are made of cardboard. They can withstand rough handling and can withstand being thrown around. Their pages are often quite easy to clean because many of them are glossy. There are plenty of board books in stores and they can sell for cheap. They often have colorful pages and simple storylines with small words so that babies and toddlers can get used to the idea of reading even when they cannot read yet.

Coloring and drawing in children - the cultural differences

Filed under: Uncategorized — Christmas Shopper @ 4:14 am

Culture plays a large role in  many things - from what we eat to how we dress - and it even has an effect on the minutae of life - like whether or not drawing will enter into a child’s repertoire of behavior.

For example, studies have shown that  Taiwanese-American and Chinese-American parents tend to plan more drawing time for their children than their  European-American  counterpart parents do. As a result of more time spent drawing, Taiwanese-American and Chinese-American children’s drawings are seen as being more advanced than those of their counterparts.

According to  studies carried out in 1983, when children are provided with drawing materials and encouragement they tend to create works that reflect their particular culture - and each culture has its own ’style’. For example, French children tend to spend a good deal of time on drawing, filling the entire page with large, colorful designs,  drawings by Japanese children  meanwhile tend to be more complex, harmonious and complete than drawings by North-American children. Children from the island of Bali on the other hand,  typically use many small marks to draw intricate, colorful designs which fill the page.

While many cultures use and value drawing as art, there are a few cultures that show no evidence of drawing at all.

The children from the island of Ponape (in Micronesia) usually have no prior drawing experience. Yet when researchers carried out a recent study, those Ponape children that were given drawing materials tended to draw by starting in the center of the page making shapes that connected outward like groups of linked bubbles - they also tended not.

Interestingly, when children from cultures that do not include drawing are first introduced to the tools, they tend to experiment, scribble, or attempt realistic drawings right from the start. There seems to be great variation in first attempts. However, in general, it has been found that children tend to draw from a cultural perspective, imitating the designs reflected in fabrics, architecture or other aspects of the adult culture including symbol systems such as written letters or characters and numerals.

Culture therefore confines and defines  the art of children.

Children from ‘First World’ countries like Europe and the USA are given opportunities to draw and color and are encouraged to do so by their parents, teachers and other caregivers. Material is plentiful too with crayons, paper,  coloring books and even online resources in plentiful supply. Little boys tend to enjoy coloring pictures that represent what he sees every day such as cars, trucks and machinery while little girls enjoy coloring images from fairy tales and   princesses and at sites like Princess Coloring Pages you’ll find the best princess coloring page

With both encouragement and resources a-plenty, our children are very lucky to have both the means and the support to express themselves creatively through drawing and colouring.

Encouraging art and creativity in children

Filed under: Uncategorized — Christmas Shopper @ 8:35 pm

Encourage creativity in your children by providing them with the time, resurces and the space for making art. Try to set aside interruption-free time for drawing, in a mess-proof zone - so that their creativity can run wild. Make sure you cover all surfaces so that any splashes of paint or scribbles of crayon are ‘caught’ - because nothing squishes creativity more so than a parent saying “Don’t make a mess” at regular intervals.

Choosing the right drawing materials is also very important. Many craft materials can be improvised, but when drawing tools and paper are required, opt for a small selection of good quality age-appropriate products, rather than loads of inferior products. Be sure to check safety information and follow instructions. Young children should always be surpervised during ‘art time’ because many necessary materials - such as crayons - pose a choking hazard.

Surroundings:As with writing or working at a computer, good posture and a comfortable position are important for drawing. A child sized table and chair is actually preferable to an easel. If the chair is a little high, provide a phone book as a footrest. A coffee table and an inexpensive plastic chair work well. A small kitchen storage trolley is perfect for containing supplies, or if space does not allow, a portable fishing tackle box is a great option too. Messy toddlers may need a drop-cloth and supervision to avoid ink-stained walls, as even ‘washable’ pens often don’t deliver on that promise!

Art Materials:Avoid cheap markers, too-hard pencils and thin paints - these types of materials are discouraging to the child and therefore  a waste of money. Provide many sheets of plain blank paper to inspire their creativity and occasionally invest in a canvas so that your child can paint something and chances are you’ll want to hang it on your wall!  Provide also coloring books or coloring pages which are bountiful online - coloring pages are not so great for creativity, however they do provide children with the  chance to practice their fine motor skills and sometimes it’s very relaxing and just what they need. They can simply color in without the ‘pressure’ of thinking about WHAT to draw.  Little boys typically enjoy coloring pictures of cars and trucks while little girls usually enjoy colouring images of princesses and fairies - sites like like Fairy Coloring Pages you’ll find many colour in fairies

When it comes to drawing and coloring, at each age/stage of your child’s life provide….

Buying for Kids? Avoid Recalls!

Filed under: Uncategorized — Christmas Shopper @ 1:06 pm

When shopping for toys for kids, it is necessary to know which toys are safe to buy for your children and which ones are hazardous. Some toys have been recalled but the stores continue to shelf them. If you are not up to date with the recall list, then you could purchase some good looking toys that your kids will love to play with but these toys might contain some toxic, harmful materials. You need to be careful when buying toddlers toys or toys for babies in particular because a tiny amount of toxic material in toys can hurt them.

It is a disturbing fact that hazardous toys continue to be sold in stores across the country, despite laws that are supposed to protect kids from toxic toys. Toy safety is a major problem that parents are always worried about. Although most toys on store shelves are safe, there continues to be toys that are dangerous for small kids. With that in mind, parents and child care providers need to exercise care in order to avoid toy-related deaths and injuries. With more information, the scope of unsafe toys has been widened to include previously considered safe toys such as those labeled as phthalate-free. Bear in mind that even some products labeled phthalate-free contain the dangerous chemical.

While toy manufacturers should quickly recall products that are considered unsafe and also give parents the necessary information they need to allow them to purchase safe toys for their children, some of them just do not. You will no doubt have heard of many toy recalls on TV but there are a lot more toy recalls that are not reported. As a result, parents may not know that they are unsafe to use or buy. The government agency that is supposed to keep toys safe called The Consumer Product Safety Commission have published alerts and information on toy safety but there are still many manufacturers that are ignoring Congress and still sell toys laden with toxic materials such as phthalates. The Consumer Product Safety Commission cannot do much about existing toys that are already out on the shelves.

If you think that you have a hazardous toy or any product that is unsafe, you should report the incident to the CPSC by calling a toll-free Consumer Hotline at 800-638-2772 (TTY 800-638-8270).

Secrets to Facial Skin Care Success

Filed under: Uncategorized — Christmas Shopper @ 10:19 pm

There is no shame in good facial skin care. All of us desire a youthful glow for our skin. In truth, it is unlikely that any of us would keep our laugh lines given the opportunity to be safely rid of them. Taking good care of your facial skin is vital to retaining a youthful look for as long as possible.

However, in our hurry to purchase the latest facial skin care fad, we often neglect the simple things that we can do to keep our skin looking firm, young and healthy far more effective than the latest celebrity beauty trend.

* Get the right vitamins. Age causes the skin to lose the ability to retain moisture and resist free radicals. Daily vitamins can help your skin continue to act young.

* Add healthy nuts to your diet. Walnuts in particular contain a variety of antioxidants that fight free radicals and that can “fool” your skin into behaving as if it is younger than it actually is. Walnuts become particularly important to your skin care regimen after you turn 25, when your skin stops producing antioxidants on its own.

* Moisturize throughout the day. Younger skin can suffer from excessive moisturizing because the oils in many lotions causes it to break out. However, as you age your skin loses its ability to retain moisture, so there is no harm in giving your skin a moisturizing boost with a lightly scented daily moisturizer periodically throughout the day. Monitor results so that you can switch lotions if you experience breakouts.

These facial skin care tips will protect your skin as well as help restore it. Treating the skin from outside and inside with these facial skin care tips will help make your skin healthier than ever before.
